12" Disc Sander

"Firstly I must say thanks for the great plans. I have both the No.1 Tube Notcher and the 12" Disc Sander and have found them great value."
M. T. - New Zealand.

This Disc Sander is designed with the utmost simplicity of construction in mind. In most instances, the main parts of the machine can be made from common steel off-cuts found in the average workshop.  It is also very sturdy and there are two locking levers for the adjustable table instead of the more usual, one.

The table is a generous 450mm wide and 255mm deep and tilts down 46°. The table also incorporates a channel to accept a standard mitre fence.

The abrasive sanding disc is enclosed above and below the table by a safety guard to prevent any nasty accidents.

Virtually any common base-mount electric motor will be suitable. A ¾ h.p. motor would suffice, but better results will be seen with a 1-1½ h.p. motor.

The whole machine has a very small footprint, making it ideal for the home workshop and small factory alike.

A lathe (or access to one) is necessary for truing the faceplate.

The only other tools required are a scriber or craft knife, a tape measure, a compass or dividers, a setsquare, a centre punch, a jigsaw or bandsaw, a hacksaw or cut-off saw, a pedestal or hand drill, Ø8.5mm, Ø10.5mm, Ø10.2mm, Ø12mm, drill bits, Ø20mm hole saw (or one that’s slightly larger than your motor’s shaft), M8 x 1 and M10 x 1.5 taps, a welder, and an angle grinder and file for finishing.

More than just a collection of CAD drawings, this comprehensive manualconsists of the following:
